    David's history
The ant told me the frog was bad.
The frog told me the cat was bad.
The cat told me that, no, the rabbit is the worst of all
    So I...

To feel loved is something that is necessary for humans. Whether it's from their parents, friends, or special someone, a need to be loved is something that is universal in humans. A lack of love from a young age can cause numerous traumas in the child, weakening them against the harshness of real life. In Teacher's case, this was exactly what happened.

Born and raised as an orphan with his sister Fiona, David never felt very loved from the beginning. He was closed off from everyone except Fiona, who he stuck to like velcro. Scared to love and to be loved, he believed that he was simply unloved- allowing insecurities to pile up inside him like jenga blocks. Disappointed in himself for being unable to live up to his given name "David", he grew to hate himself more and more. His instability increased until he came down with an illness- Nightmare Syndrome. Stuck in a dream world along with his sister, it seemed as if there was no way out- until Fiona bravely sacrificed her life for her brother's escape.

Since that day, David's negative feelings did not improve, but instead, worsened. Secluding himself and burying himself in books, he researched relentlessly for a cure to save his sister from her endless sleep in the real world. Never losing sight of his purpose, he travelled the world for years until he settled and bought a facility, opening an orphanage. Picking up stray children under all very similar circumstances (abusive families, witnesses to traumatic situations, etc), he took them all under his care as their Teacher. His true purpose though, was to use these children to continue his investigations of the strange Nightmare Syndrome, in hopes of finishing his lifelong research.

Personality:
Friendly, kind, smart and forgiving: the general traits of a good person- and one that most people consider Teacher to have. The children in the orphanage see him as a kind mentor, one who rarely gets angry (though be careful if he does) and rarely acts selfishly; wanting to always lend a hand. But there is no such thing as a perfect person, right? In fact, Teacher is someone who is far from one.

Teacher is, as most can see from the beginning, a very selfless and humble person. Down to earth, he's never been interested in a life of fame or wonder, despite his incredible skills at writing. This is a man who prefers the quiet life, deciding to buy a facility in order to use it as an orphanage. Well, life can only be so quiet when you're raising four children on your own, but he prefers this than the busy lifestyle of some author celebrity or whatever else he could be. Despite his abilities, he's not one to flaunt them around- instead placing him at a similar level to his students, in hopes of relating with them better. Of course, this friendliness that he has with those that live with him is easily taken advantage of- he would much rather live without them placing frogs on his head and in pockets. But for the most part, he's someone who enjoys and appreciates the more peaceful part of life, and wishes that his students feel the same way.

In fact, Teacher is someone who cares about the people he loves. This is not only limited to romantic love (which he doesn't have at the moment) but to family love. These students are his family, and he would do whatever for them, as long as it's in his power. With this love, comes an intense loyalty that he holds for his loved ones, one that might as well make him a dog. His dedication is one of a kind, and he would even go as far as to sacrifice himself for the benefit of someone else. He is kind and forgiving, though apparently quite a force to be reckoned with while angry...though such a thing is rare. For the most part, people describe him as being someone who is always smiling, though his smiles are always described to have something sad to them, as if he's hiding something. Whether or not that's true though, he won't say to anyone. He’s quite a secretive guy, huh?

” Why wasn’t I loved? I thought I would be loved then, but I simply wasn’t able to love.”

And unfortunately, that’s the truth. Under the initial layer of what makes up a teacher, lie a million and one things that may cast a grayer light into his good nature. Though he is someone who loves to, well, love, it is incredibly hard for him to do so- or at least he feels that way. Having his mind meddled with during childhood, he has grown a warped idea on who or how to love, to the point that he’s unsure of how to give or receive it. Unable to accept love, he’s grown up with the idea that he’s always been alone; that no one has ever loved him. No matter how much he tried to love people, no one loved him back- in his eyes at least. Childhood traumas can only grow if left untreated, and one of the most catastrophic things to happen to him was his sister’s death. As his only remaining family, Teacher grasped with such desperation that her death was severely traumatic for him; the only thing he loved had been ripped out of his hands. The following thing that has shaped him as a person was the Cheshire’s words. Gullible like no other, the young Teacher had grown to believe the cat’s words: “Only bad people can love”. And in a world surrounded by good people, he grew to believe that no matter how much he tried to love, it would never be reciprocated. Unloved, he felt as if he couldn’t live up to the meaning of the name “David”, or “recipient of love”, bringing a hatred towards his name, and himself in general. That’s the reason why he prefers to call himself Teacher or use his friend’s name to publish one of his own books. Because deep down, he truly despises himself, for letting being unable to save his sister and for not giving honor to the name that his teacher gave him.

I don’t like people to know me. Or to get them involved. I’ve…always been that way”

This type of mentality, which he has had since childhood, has forced him to close his heart from the rest of the people around him. After his sister’s death, he was like a different person entirely. Feeling unloved and with a great deal of guilt, he decided to close himself off from others. He threw on his shoulders all responsibility, not letting anyone else help him, even the only one that he would eventually call a friend. This of course, rendered him a bit socially awkward and not very good in the department of “making friends”. It’s debatable whether or not he considers his relationship with Cliff as a “friendship”, considering that such a title requires trust and a certain degree of love- which he doesn’t believe he has. It’s possible that he regards Cliff as a close acquaintance, or someone he feels indebted to, instead of as a friend. Teacher will be someone who is courteous to all the people he meets, but that’s as far as he goes. It’s easy to notice that he treats everyone at arm’s length, and for a reason. In fear of being dragged once more into the Dream World, he decided that it’s best if he’s surrounded by the least amount of people possible, searching for a cure for it on his own. Such a thing though, only managed to increase his loneliness. Even when he dies, he tells Allen to forget about him, in a desperate attempt to push another person away.

“…and he renounced taking notice of anything around him.”

But in the end, his decisions only brought negative consequences for him and those around him. Secluding himself, he blinded himself from the rest of the world, refusing to accept the actual truth. He is so stubborn that he can’t make himself believe that he is, and always has been loved. This stubbornness has forced him to live in the past for so long, unable to accept and move from his sister’s death, going as far as to not cut his hair in order to feel like she was still around him. His diaries show desperation and how far he’s actually willing to go in order to gain the cure for the disease, going as far as housing children that were susceptible to the Syndrome. He does show an incredible amount of guilt for doing this though, meaning that he doesn’t do this heartlessly; it’s just that the ends usually justify the means, no? The only problem is that he tends to realize things too late—such as at the moment of his death. Of course, his refusal to notice anything around him also applies to himself. Though he’s incredibly smart and able to become an award-winning author as a young teenager, he doesn’t think of himself very highly; it’s quite common for him to put himself down.

In the end, this doesn’t mean that he is a bad person. He’s just someone who did everything he could to rid the guilt that had haunted him for so long and that maybe he would finally learn to love and be loved in return. What he never bothered to see though, was that he was already loved by everyone around him.
